tickets terms & conditions

  • Dates:

4-5 May: Abdominal Ultrasound - Practical course

6-7 May: sightseeing in the trendy city of Porto

8-9 May: ADVANCED Ultrasound - Practical course

  • Specialists:

🎓 Yilin Tan, DipECVDI Specialist in Diagnostic Imaging, Lecturer at the University of Edinburgh;

🎓 Leticia Marcelino, DipECVDI Specialist in Diagnostic Imaging, Clinician at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.

  • Learning objectives:

Because the course is 100% practical, attending on 4-5 May will give you the confidence to perform abdominal ultrasound, even if you don't have prior experience! Straight away, you can provide better care for your patients and you have an immediate new source of income! What you invest will get back to you fast!

If you want to develop more advanced skills after the 4-5 May, or if you already have ultrasound experience, you should attend 8-9 May. In this second part of the course, you will learn advanced ultrasound of the GI tract, pancreas, adrenals, vessels (find that portosystemic shunt!), thoracic POCUS, neck (thyroid and parathyroid), fine-needle aspirates and trucut biopsies. A ticket can be shared by 2 colleagues, for example, you attend 4 May and a friend attends 5 May.

  • Who can attend:

90% of participants will be vets. But we are so excited to see more and more nurses/techs doing ultrasound (just like in human medicine!). We also welcome students who wish to start their career with the skills and confidence to succeed!

  • Why are we doing this course?

The organisers and speakers are working pro-bono, to fundraise for a local dog shelter (Associação Midas) and for a mission in S. Tomé e Príncipe (Africa) with the local animal charity AMA and Veterinarians Without Borders. Most dogs and cats in this African country suffer greatly due to lack of education. For example, the locals believe they can beat up animals or throw boiling water at them because they don't feel pain. We want to change that! We want to print 1500 copies of a children's book about caring for dogs, distribute them throughout the schools of this African country, and educate children to treat animals with kindness and respect. For every £200 donated, 15 impoverish children (who have no toys, no books, no shoes...) will be given a book. Help us improve the lives of more African children and animals here. For the first time in this country, a book about animals will enter the national educational program and will be taught in the schools every year, which is a milestone! Our presence will also bring a source of income to the local community, where half the people live on less than £2 per day.

  • Thank you!

We are beyond grateful for the support offered by Servive (Emer Group) and Hospital de Referência Veterinária Montenegro. Great vets who care about helping the communities in developing countries and their animals! If you too would like to support or sponsor this course or African mission, please email us.

  • What is included in the ticket?

- 28h of practical ultrasound CPD (7h per day)

- CPD certificate

- coffee breaks

  • What is NOT included in the ticket?

- transport (there are many low cost flights)

- meals (I am from Porto and I know where to take you for great food at <£10 per person ;))

- hotel (starting from only £25 per person, Porto is very trendy but still cheap!)

  • Do you need to organise anything?

Only your flights. I want this trip to be stress-free for you, and so I organised meals, sightseeing and AirBnB. Each person covers their own expenses. You can book your own room at AirBnB or Booking.com, or you can stay in the flats that I pre-booked from only £25 per night. The flats have a kitchen where you can cook. If you are coming with friends or family, they are welcome to stay with us.

  • Location:

Hospital de Referência Veterinária Montenegro, Rua da Póvoa 34, Porto.

  • How many people per dog? Are the dogs sedated?

We will likely limit the course to only 15 people per day; 3 people per dog and per machine. We can get as many machines and dogs as we want, but our experience has taught us that you learn more in small groups rather than scanning on your own. The dogs chosen are calm and lightly sedated. There will be dogs of different sizes and genders, and different machines, so you can rotate.

  • Program:

9.30-12.30 course, 12.30-14 vegan lunch, 14-17.40  course, >17.40 watch the sunset & dinner together.

Weeks before, we will email you written notes, images and important articles, to allow us to focus on practicals during the course!

On 4-5 May, you will learn to evaluate all abdominal organs (GI, pancreas, adrenals, kidneys, liver, spleen, bladder, main vessels and lymph nodes). On these days you will scan scan scan until you are confident in abdominal ultrasound!

Stay on for the second part of the course (8-9 May) to learn advanced ultrasound of the GI tract, pancreas, adrenals, vessels (find that portosystemic shunt!), thoracic POCUS, neck (thyroid and parathyroid), fine-needle aspirates and trucut biopsies. On these two days, there will also have interactive lectures in addition to the practicals, in order to understand advanced concepts and complex diseases.

  • I am not a vet, vet nurse, tech or student, can I join? Can I bring my partner, family or friends?

Yes! Family and friends are always welcome in our courses/missions. Join us for every breakfast, lunch, dinner and sightseeing.

  • Flights:

Search for flights on skyscanner, or check all direct flights to Porto here. There are many low-cost flights with Ryanair, Easyjet, Transavia and Vueling.

  • Where can I see footage from previous courses?

Our 2024 vet courses and mission were INCREDIBLE and you can see pictures and videos on our Highlight Folders 'Azores', 'Africa' and 'Ericeira' on instagram @ohana.animalcharity.

  • Are the tickets or deposit refundable?

They are not, as we had to pay expenses in advance and these are not refundable to us. But you can transfer the ticket to a friend, so your money won't be lost! And remember that all money received will be used to help shelter and street animals.

  • What are the payment options?

Google pay, debit card or transfer. Bank transfer results in more money for the animals (compared with payment via the website) because there are no fees. We can reserve a ticket when you pay a 50% deposit. See details for bank transfer.
